Every "free things to do in Oakland" list is the same 30 items scraped off a tourism site by somebody who's never been here.

This one's shorter. It's what I'd actually tell a friend to do.

Last verified: July 2026

Lake Merritt, obviously

3.4 miles around and still the best free thing in the Town. Go at golden hour, when the necklace of lights comes on.

The Bonsai Garden at Lakeside Park is free and criminally under-visited. Sunday afternoons there's a drum circle at the Pergola. The Rotary Nature Center is free too.

Bring a blanket, buy nothing, stay two hours.

Friday Nights at OMCA

1000 Oak St — every Friday, April through October, 5–9pm. Free admission.

Live music, DJ sets, Off the Grid food trucks lined up along 10th St between Oak and Fallon, and lawn space to sit on. Gallery access still needs a museum ticket, but the block party outside is the actual draw and it costs nothing.

Probably the best free night in the Bay. Full stop.

Free telescope viewing at Chabot

10000 Skyline Blvd — Friday and Saturday nights, 7:30–10:30pm, free.

Three of the largest public telescopes in the country, on the Observatory Deck, up in the hills. You don't pay anything and most people have no idea it's free.

Weather-dependent: the scopes close in rain and when humidity climbs past 85–90%, so check before you drive up. Park around back and follow the signs to the observatory gate.

First Fridays

First Friday of every month, 5–9pm, Telegraph between 22nd and 27th. Free, and up to 30,000 people show up.

Show up at 5:30, not 8 — it ends at 9 sharp so vendors can clear the street.

The murals

Downtown, Chinatown, Jack London, West Oakland. No route, no map, no ticket — walk and look up.

[KOLBY — name 3 or 4 specific walls worth going out of your way for. That's what turns this from filler into the reason someone bookmarks the page.]

Free museum days

[CONFIRM] Reported free-admission spots include the Mills College Art Museum and the Oakland Asian Cultural Center. Several other museums run free days on a rotating schedule.

Verify each before publishing — free-day policies change constantly, and getting one wrong wastes somebody's Saturday. Which is exactly the failure this whole page is supposed to beat.

Jack London Square

Ping pong tables, people watching, and the waterfront. Outdoor movies and public art in season [CONFIRM schedule].

The Sunday farmers market is free to walk even if you buy nothing — and it's the most pleasant one in the city for wandering. All the markets by day →

Get outside

Redwood Regional Park — old-growth redwoods, 20 minutes from downtown. Feels like you drove three hours. [CONFIRM parking fee]

Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach — Alameda. Actual sand, actual swimming, warmer and calmer than anywhere else nearby. [CONFIRM parking fee]

[KOLBY — your hill hike of choice, and the trailhead people can't find.]

A few ground rules for the free stuff

Free in Oakland usually means free to show up, not free to park. Budget for a meter downtown, get to the lake before 6pm on a warm Saturday, and check a venue's own calendar the day of — hours here were last verified July 2026, and the small stuff changes constantly.

Anything weather-dependent (Chabot, the beach, most of the hills) is worth a 30-second check before you drive. Everything else on this list works on a whim, which is most of the point.

For the current weekend's version of this list, Things to Do in Oakland This Weekend → is updated every Thursday.
